a weekend of birthday celebrations & people,
walks in a wintry landscape by the sea,
moments of quiet with a book.
it's march but winter's hanging in there,
yet it's lost its grip.
daylight lingers,
lightness inside pushes through.
i've been immersed in the words of Ali Smith,
she reignited a passion to read
that's been on a backburner for a bit.
words like these in her book Winter,
(which I couldn't put down
despite a desire to savour,
so the only option was to read each word slowly):
“What he longs for instead,
as he sits at the food-strewn table,
is winter, winter itself.
He wants the essentiality of winter,
not this half-season grey selfsameness.
He wants real winter where woods are sheathed in snow,
trees emphatic with its white,
their bareness shining and enhanced because of it,
the ground underfoot snow-covered as if with frozen feathers
or shredded cloud but streaked with gold through the trees from low winter sun,
and at the end of the barely discernible track,
along the dip in the snow that indicates a muffled path between the trees,
the view and the woods opening to a light
that’s itself untrodden,
never been blemished,
wide like an expanse of snow-sea,
above it more snow promised,
waiting its time in the blank of the sky.”
i've cleared my diary for next week
to give my joint venture the attention it craves right now.
things are exciting on the work front on so many levels
that sometimes it's a littly tricky to swith off.
but i'm learning
& loving the balance.
wishing you a lovely Sunday evening
& light-filled week ahead.

Time, a muffled sound of footsteps from down below,
renovation has begun in the building across the street.
I have lunch with Bo Carpelan,
his words about aging are unembellished,
yet filled with beauty.
I
taste his sentences on the tip of my tongue,
vaguely sensing something about
what’s yet to come
under his curious but gentle gaze.
A fly darts around,
doesn’t seem to find peace for its restless soul,
its wings carrying an air of
midsummer
in the middle of an August day.
The end of the summer
has a bittersweet tinge.
The end of the summer
has a bittersweet tinge.
"But a chair, sunlight, flowers:
these are not to be dismissed.
I am alive,
I live,
I breathe,
I put my hand out,
into the sunlight."
- Margaret Atwood
Aikaa, kadun puolelta askeleet kantautuvat vaimeina,
vastapäisessä talossa tehdään remonttia.
Lounasseurana Bo Carpelan,
hän puhuu
vanhenemisesta,
kaunistelematta mutta kauniisti.
Maistelen lauseita,
aavistan
jotain hamaa tulevaa,
tunnen uteliaan mutta lempeän katseensa.
Kärpänen
poukkoilee,
ei löydä sielulleen rauhaa,
tuo elokuiseen päivään häivähdyksen
keskikesää.
Loppukesässä suloista haikeutta.
Loppukesässä suloista haikeutta.

"Nousemme hitaasti portaat.
"Ison salin ikkunan ulkopuolella häälyy levottomia varjoja,
salin keltainen lattia, kustavilainen sohvaryhmä,
valkoinen taffelipiano on vaiti.
Valo on niin voimakasta,
että polvihousuihin puettu poika tuskin ehtii nähdä omaa hahmoaan
ikkunoiden väliin kiinnitetyssä vanhassa peilissä,
miten nopeasti se katoaa,
miten vierashuone on käyttämättömänä,
miten virkattu päiväpeitto hohtaa."
"Marina lähtee pois, Jan kiertää minun kanssani taloa.
Yläkerran keittiönovi ei tahdo aueta.
Miten viileätä täällä on,
vesi tiskipöydän vanhassa peltiämpärissä,
tippuva vesihana:
täällä ei kukaan ole ollut vuosikymmeniin.
Täällä höyrysi hellalla isoimmassa kattilassa kiehuva vesi,
joka sitten kaadettiin sinkkiammeeseen,
ja meidät pestiin isolla reikäisellä pesusienellä
kunnes loistimme kuin majakat."
Bo Carpelan: Kesän varjot
There are places you just want to put your arms around
& S A V E.
Viikonloppuna rakastuin tuohon joen mutkassa tyhjillään seisovaan taloon.
Bo Carpelanin sanoihin jo nuorena tyttönä.

This photo duo touches my restless soul
in the aftermath of the previous post.
You see, one of those infamous areas
of 'unfinished business' is the bedroom,
which we'll get to tackle one day (after the hallway),
creating a separate study/library area in one end.
Here's me imagining myself when it's done,
(well perhaps not in those heels :). )
Until then it's still a case of contending
with piles of books strewn here and there
and stuffed in boxes...
“As the hours crept by,
the afternoon sunlight bleached
all the books on the shelves
to pale, gilded versions of themselves
and warmed the paper and ink inside the covers
so that the smell of unread words
hung in the air.”

It was a real honour for our home
to be featured in very good company
in the recently published 12xKoti book
by Jonna Kivilahti and Krista Keltanen.
I've been given one copy to share via my blog for a lucky winner.
Just leave a comment and perhaps tell me a little bit about yourself
after this post if you wish to take part!
The winner will be picked on Friday 15 February.
(For anonymous commentators, please include your name.)
(Just to add, the book is written in Finnish,
but as the visual side is in the limelight
it may not matter too much :) )
Kotimme pääsi hienoon seuraan
Jonna Kivilahden ja Krista Keltasen vastajulkaistun
12xKoti -kirjan sivuilla, mikä tuntuu suurelta kunnialta.
Sain yhden ylimääräisen kappaleen blogissani arvottavaksi,
joten halukkaat osallistujat jättäkääpä kommentti alle
ja kertokaa samalla vaikka vähän itsestänne.
Voittaja selviää perjantaina 15. helmikuuta.
(Anonyymisti kommentoivat laittakaapa nimi mukaan.)
