November arrived & with it, some slower days. I've been breathing, quietly organising this or that corner of the home, thinking about exhibitions to see, movies to watch, books to read. Landing in rest after months of so much going on.
A few glimmers of the season just around the corner. The first decoration arrived home with me from the department store, and it's only afterwards that I realised I'd pinned a similar one by Elsa Billgren – I really love her gentle and relaxed approach to decorating and all things aesthetically pleasing.
E.E. Cummings has the most beautiful words for this month that despite the dusk, shimmers:
"Peering from some high window; at the gold of November sunset
(and feeling that if day has to become night this is a beautiful way)."
And I say that I've been missing something of the old "blogging days". Things are of course quiet here these days, but a morning pointing the lens at small things that lift the heart is still a form of mediation for me I see. So I would like to continue. And if you happen to be meeting me here, I wish you a beautiful season ahead, with treasures in the dark.

we’ve lived in our apartment for about ten years now,
but only just did up the bathroom.
we knew there was a major pipe renovation in line for the whole building
& wanted to wait for it to be behind
just in case they’d have to rip things away.
so anyway, last autumn was finally the right time
to tackle our cute and old but very weary bathroom,
which was in major need of an update
before we’d run into serious problems with moisture etc.
here's how it turned out.

our bathroom is compact in size
& also has to house our washing machine,
so the answer was to extend it a little
to include what used to be a cupboard in the next room
(our bedroom).
so the area behind the curtain
now hides our washer and dryer.
to conceal boring things like electrics and plumbing,
the ceiling was lowered a little
which I was a little concerned about,
but luckily the space still stands tall!
we wanted to stick to the original colour scheme,
all muted greys and stone.
microcementing the walls brought some lovely texture
that feels like it's alive
with its shifting shades.
the sinks, taps & shower from Domus Classica
are beautiful reminders of the apartment’s 20s origins.
the previous 80s sink and tap weren’t exactly worth holding on to,
so a major improvement in this department!
the floor tiling was a bit of a compromise,
as I was originally after larger, concrete-type tiles.
we stuck to 10x10 cm tiles recommended by the builders,
which were easier to install to ensure
water would drain off the floor quickly and efficiently.
in the smaller floor tile,
there was a lot less on offer
in the styles that were to my liking…
but I’m quite happy with the porcelanato tiles we chose after all,
which are exactly the colour of our original hexagonal tiles
as well as being durable and super easy to keep clean
without having to worry about oiling and so on,
as is the case with many of the lovely Moroccan-type tiles.
and a bath tub was must!
as for storage space,
there’s room to stash away towels and detergents
on shelves above the washer & dryer behind the curtain.
we keep shampoos and shower stuff
in a Componibili storate unit by Kartell.
we also bought a pretty glass cabinet
to be added on the wall above
but want to have the glass frosted first.
always something that remains to be sorted…
instead of underfloor heating,
we insisted on holding on to the original radiator,
which provides loads of heat
& makes sure the space dries up quickly after a shower.
we added a towel radiator above it on the wall
(which can be glimpsed through the mirror
in the first photo).
a tiny basin was installed in the toilet next to the bathroom.
in some of the other apartments in our building,
the separate toilet has been joined up with the main bathroom
over the years,
but we wanted to keep ours separate.
I still need to find the right mirror etc.,
so here just a tiny glimpse.
and all this had its snowball effect, as the story usually goes –
we had a wall to patch up in our bedroom
next to the bathroom afterwards,
which is the last remaining room in our home
to get an update.
we’ve now uncovered and treated the original floorboards,
painted the walls in clay paint
& dear husband has been busy building cupboards.
the finishing touches continue,
and I’ll show some more when it’s all done.
we’re also in the process of repainting the hallway
and all the doors in the apartment that have yellowed over the years…
in other words interior inspiration and renovation thoughts
are very much on the agenda right now.
the shower and bathroom tap by Mora,
cloakroom tap by Damixa,
and washbasins and lamp (above the mirror) by Burlington
are from Domus Classica,
who I collaborated with on a small scale.
I don’t usually do this sort of thing,
but in this case, they would have been my natural choice anyway :)

olemme asuneet kodissamme kymmenisen vuotta
ja nyt oli vihdoin kylppäriremontin vuoro.
putkiremontti oli tiedossa,
joten sitä ennen ei kannattanut tehdä muuta
kuin haaveilla.
loppujen lopuksi putkiremppa toteutettiin kevytversiona,
jossa ei kalusteisiin pahemmin kajottu.
aiempi kylpyhuone oli alkuperäinen ja suloinen sävyiltään,
muttei sietänyt kyllä varsinkaan loppuaikoina yhtään lähempää tarkastelua.
vesieristystä ei ollut lainkaan,
mutta vanha kylpyamme ja klinkkerilattia
pitivät huolen siitä, ettei mitään kosteusvauriota ilmennyt,
vaikka olimme varautuneet pahimpaan.
tikittävä aikapommi se kuitenkin oli.
kylppärimme on kompaktin kokoinen,
mutta pientä parannusta saatiin tilanteeseen,
kun napattiin viereisen makkarimme puolelta
komeron verran lisätilaa kylpyhuoneen yhteyteen.
verhon takana oleva tila on siis entinen makuuhuoneen komero.
sinne saatiin pesutorni piiloon,
jonka yläpuolelle jäi vielä säilytystilaa.
kattoa laskettiin hieman, jotta putket ja sähköt saatiin piiloon.
tuota ajatusta kieltämättä pelkäsin,
mutta korkeahan tuo tila on edelleen!
muuten putket asennettiin ihan pintavetoina.
vanhan tuhoamisesta tulee aina huono omatunto,
mitä vähän lievitettiin pysyttelemällä alkuperäisessä sävypaletissa.
seinät päällystettiin mikrosementillä.
sävyä viilailtiin, kunnes se ei taittanut siniseen tai violettiin
tai mihin milloinkin,
vaan tuloksena oli vaaleanharmaa, lämminsävyinen,
elävä, mutta rauhallinen pinta.
Domus Classicasta hankkimamme altaat, hanat ja suihku
sopivat hienosti 20-luvun taloon.
entinen allas ja hana olivatkin 80-luvun horrorit
eli huomattava parannus.
lattialaatan suhteen tehtiin kompromissi.
haaveilin alunperin isoista kuviollisista betonilaatoista,
mutta rakentajat olivat sitä mieltä,
että kymppi kertaa kymppi on kaatojen kannalta
huomattavasti helpompi ratkaisu.
ja tässä kohtaa huomattiin, että markkinoilla on selvä aukko,
kun ihanimmat laatat on aina isoja…
mutta näihin porcelanato-laattoihin ollaan oikein tyytyväisiä.
ne ovat ihan samaa sävyä kuin alkuperäiset heksagonaalilaatat olivat,
minkä lisäksi ne ovat kestävät ja helpot pitää puhtaina
ilman, että tarvitsee miettiä öljyämistä tai muuta,
kuten marokkolaislaattojen kanssa.
kylpyamme oli itsestäänselvyys!
säilytystilaa on siis verhojen takana hyllyillä,
jossa on tilaa pyyhkeille ja pesuaineille.
lisäksi hankittiin Kartellin Componibili-hyllykkö
shampoille ja sen sellaisille.
sen yläpuolelle seinälle on tulossa vielä vitriinikaappi,
jonka lasit on tarkoitus vielä huurruttaa
läheisessä lasitusliikeessä,
kunhan saadaan aikaiseksi :)
lattialämmitystä ei tarvinnut harkita,
kun vanha patteri posottaa sen verran hyvin,
että kylppäri pysyy lämpimänä ja kuivana.
sen yläpuolelle asennettiin rättipatteri.
lisäksi viereiseen pikkuvessaan lisättiin vihdoin pikkuinen pesuallas.
talossamme ovat monet yhdistäneet pikkuvessan kylpyhuoneen yhteyteen,
mutta halusimme ne kuitenkin pitää edelleen erillään.
tänne on tarkoitus vielä löytyä se oikea peili jne.,
joten ihan pikkuvilaus tässä.
kaiken kaikkiaan ollaan todella tyytyväisiä siihen,
miten sujuvasti kaikki meni.
tuonne on nyt ihana sulkeutua
ja jättää muu kaaos hetkeksi taakseen.
tällaisilla jutuilla tuppaa olemaan lumipalloefekti
– viereisen makuuhuoneen seinä piti tietenkin rakentaa uudelleen,
joten olimme pantanneet varsinaisen makkarin remontin viimeiseksi.
nyt sielläkin on kaivettu vanhan korkkimaton alta lattialaudat esille,
jotka käsiteltiin lipeällä, suovalla ja öljyllä, kuten muualla asunnossa.
seinät on nyt maalattu savimaalilla ja mies on rakennellut kaapistoa.
laitan kuvia, kunhan siellä hommat valmistuvat.
eikä kahta ilman kolmatta…
työn alla on myös eteisen ja kaikkien asunnon vuosien saatossa
kellastuneiden ovien maalaus…
eli täällä yhtäkkiä remontti- ja sisustusjutut kovasti taas pinnalla.
Moran suihku ja hana kylpyhuoneessa,
Damixan hana WC:ssä ja Burligntonin pesualtaat ja valaisin (peilin yläpuolella)
kaikki Domus Classicasta,
jonka kanssa olin pienimuotoisessa yhteistyössä.
En pahemmin harrasta tällaisia kaupallisia kuvioita,
mutta olisin kääntynyt samaisen liikkeen puoleen joka tapauksessa.
